For his birthday I made turkey pot pie (it was actually sort of a punishment. he bought a 23 pound turkey and we had tons of leftovers. i figured the least he could do was sacrifice a nice birthday dinner and choke down some more of the turkey we had.) and a red velvet cake for dessert. It was the first time, really, that I had made a home-made cake--not that it's that big of a feat--and also the first time I tried to make a baked good look nice. It was a success, if I do say so myself, even though the pictures don't really make it look that great. And the cake didn't look wet like it does in the picture.

We only put nine candles on the cake because we didn't want to set off the fire alarm.
