Am I Right, or Am I Right??

What keeps baby toy manufacturers from making a teething ring that is actually effective? None of my siblings liked their teething rings, and none of my (two) kids have, either. My mom solved the problem by wrapping an ice cube in a washcloth, wrapping a rubber band around it, and letting the kid go to town. I tried that with Ian and he didn't like the coldness, and now we don't have any room in our freezer to use our ice cube maker, so Kellan is out of luck. This morning I came up with a brilliant idea, though: wrap one of the ineffective teething toys up in a wet wash cloth just like my mom did with the ice cube.

Instant success. Now maybe he'll stop trying to chew on my face.

Sea and Sand

Monday we went to the beach and it was pretty awesome.

It's not like I haven't been to the beach before, but this is my first real experience with a warm beach. Truly delightful. We went with our friends Ken and Kristen and their baby named Cole:

Our shantytown Jesse assembled to keep the babies from the sun:

Pictures

The other day Ian, Kellan and I went to work with Jesse. We hung out around town, ate lunch with Jesse, and walked around DC for a little bit. Here are some pictures:

Blueberry Picking

So, yeah. It was hot, and hard to do with two kids, but it was really nice to get out and do something as a family. The berries were great, and only $2.49/lb.

There was a snake hiding in the bushes, waiting to be picked:

Ian's shorts kept falling off randomly during the day, and every time it would happen he would end up falling flat on his face before we figured out what had happened. This is just before he fell:

When we got back from picking blueberries we stopped by Costco really quickly to grab some groceries, and you'll never guess what they had there. Yes! Blueberries! For $2.19/lb!

Game Plan

I've decided that we need to do more "touristy" stuff around here. That way, maybe I'll forget I'm actually living here and might start to believe we're just on an extended vacation.

First up: Visiting the Antietam. You know, the Civil War battlefield. This is what we did for the fourth. We went the day before because Jesse had to work on the fourth, but it was really neat to think about our independence while at a place where so much history took place.

You can read about it here. It was really neat, especially because it's still very rural out there so you can really imagine it happening. This is the view from the visitor's center:

Unfortunately, you're going to have to imagine it, or else visit it, because the pictures we took don't really do anything to help you picture it; they're mostly just of fields. The trip was driving from point to point (it would've been cool to bike it) and reading various signs and looking at the map. Kind of hard to do with a kid like Ian, or kids that have to be strapped in and out of car seats, but I'm glad we went.

Of course, then had cannons:

And monuments to the divisions that participated in the battle. This is my favorite, for the Georgia Confederate soldiers. It says "We sleep here in obedience to law; when duty called, we came, when country called, we died."

This is Bloody Lane:

And Burnside Bridge:

And Kellan, for good measure:

I really liked re-learning about the Civil War, so you guys should go read about Antietam so you'll feel smart.

I'm Addicted

To epicurious. So many delicious dinners and desserts to make. So unhealthy.

How Embarassing!

I completely forgot to post that I got my mullet cut! Sorry to leave you hanging, Brittney.

This post is really about our new camera. We saved up for the past few months and bought a digital SLR. The image quality is nicer, but even better than that is the fact that we can actually capture images as they happen, instead of the few seconds after something noteworthy happens. Yesterday I was able to get this:

Yep. Best thing for a baby you could get. And here's one of Kellan just for good measure:
